I got to the office at around 9:00 am and I had no idea what I had to do. I went directly to the 5th floor and I knocked into the office door. Nicely, I introduced myself to the secretary and I asked for Jose Orrego, my mentor. They told me to wait for a couple of minutes. After about 5 minutes a man approached and asked me if I was here for the 1-month internship and I immediately answered. He took me to another office were I had to wait for Veronica, my mentor for the day; Jose Orrego had left for a meeting.
As soon as I stepped on the office carpet I felt a weird sensation. I was excited, but at the same time terrified about the new environment. The office was really nice and comfortable. It had a lot of desks placed together with a personal computer for each worker, it looked like a tech lab. They had a little area to have lunch, a place to leave your bags and two bathrooms.
When Veronica came in I was really excited and happy to meet her. I introduced myself again and she took me around the office in order for me to be more comfortable since it was my first day. I went around saying hi to many people that worked in the same office. Since all of them had around 25 years old the environment was extremely welcoming and positive. They received me with a smile and they were constantly sharing funny stories among themselves, so periodically I commented, always having a positive attitude and willing to help in anything.
| the Facebook page. Therefore, I had to select the best pictures from the projects they had worked in and separate them in different folders. I took about 3 hours to work in this because I had to revise about 40 projects, which took me a lot of time. I also had to use the program "PAINT" to resize some images in order for them to be perfect when updating their social media website, in this case Facebook. |
Since I finished my tasks faster than planned, in theory I had nothing else to do. However, I wanted to learn something else and keep on exploring the area of marketing within the company, so I asked Veronica for an extra job that I could help in. "It's not only important to market your company, you should also make sure that they are marketing yourself in the best possible way." That's exactly what I did. For the following hours before my internship was over I had to stumble upon the internet and check out different websites that talked about Jose Orrego. My job in this case, was not only to identify the information that the website had, but also check out what architectural projects they mentioned. The whole point of me taking notes about this, was to inform Veronica what website they had to email so that they could update them with | |
- Maybe, the work they assigned me was not the most challenging in the office, however, this might happen because since I'm younger than all of the other employees, obviously I have less experience; after all, I'm new at this. I hope and I'm sure, that over time when they get to know my skills better and what I'm capable of doing, they will give me more challenging tasks.
- Since Metropolis is really important, most of the time Veronica and the other people I had met were working really hard in projects they were developing. They used sophisticated programs in their computers to finish their tasks and have everything ready at the end of the day. This doesn't mean that they didn't talk to me or that they were not nice. They were very helpful and they gave me everything I needed. Veronica constantly checked what I was doing and she was always there to help if I had any questions.
- I could notice that even if they had small talks constantly they were all concentrated in their own projects. In other words, everyone had their own computer and they worked independently in their creations. Since all the workers are architectures, they work alone in the buildings they are producing, always developing and solving their ideas.
- I didn't tame my lunch the first day, and during their free time they had lunch together and I saw that they had long conversations, and basically it was a time were they sat together in the table and they talked about things that not necessarily where related to their job. I need to start taking lunch because during that free time, even if it sounds fake, it might be the time where I learn the most.
- While working they had fun. They could listen to music and take small walks if they felt like it. They had a lot of freedom in terms of their time and how they separated their working hours. People came, people left, people worked, and people talked. The environment was really nice and it was one of the reasons why the first day of my internship was more peaceful than what I imagined.
