| After exploring about journalism I decided that I wanted to be the lead writer and reporter for the life and people section together with my teammate Daniela. After planning our ideas we attended a meeting with Alix (head of "The Break") at the office of Peru this Week. The reunion was extremely successful were after two hours both of us learned techniques for journalism, steps to publish an article and every detail as to how The Break worked. After discussing distinct topics with Alix we had enough time to publish our own article, which was about Photography art here in Peru. |
What we learned and discussed in the meeting:
Tips on writing:
1. Say where you get the information -include a link sometimes or "according to" -not mla (education) but AP style (journalism) very formal NEW YORK TIMES but were teen magazine - basics on how to use journalism articles - don't stick to all the rules but it helps a lot
The minister of finance said.... "blah blah" work it into the sentence no use of parenthesis
2. Agreement from El Comercio where they can use their photos but state where you get it and who took it (Group El Comercio - use as source) peru.com, Gestion, Depor, Trome etc. If your not able to take photos. -use photos from Facebook but state where you got it., SXC.hu webpage, comments.wiki.media.com (people give up rights to a photo this is called creative comments)
EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE HAS TO HAVE AN IMAGE or a visual, preferably always an image
Credit yourself. Author: photos and text by: (if you take the picture)
Requirements:
1. When you submit an article to the editor you need a tittle (you want someone to be able to find that in any place in the world so use key words that most people may type in. EX: the best free spa products; think if you would look for that in Google what would you type. Format of the break: use capitalization just for the first letter of the first word and proper nouns.
2. Blurb ( one sentence description ) - different than your tittle goal is to get people to click on the link - what is the most interesting info on your article. Why they should read your article
3. Content - body- article.
4. Author:
5. Send the editor three links of story's that are related to the new one to give options for the viewers so we keep them on the webpage, (submit suggested tags) these can be old
6. Pre-sizing photos - first crop to the right proportion and then rezise it. crop tool: fix ratio: 624x468 pixels (always) - highlight part that you want then you go image, crop and then go to image size: 624.
Photos include:
-own tags
-caption
-photo credit (author where you got it - ex: name, wikimediacomments.com
Practice: start with the most important thing first or make it interesting. Sometimes use personal storys, get creative with details. Articles are 200- 500 words long.
Tip for event finding:
- ovejanegra.com.pe
- sientemag.com (artsy page. find a balance)
There were several steps we had to follow in order to finish and have a successful article. Below is the entire process before publishing it:
The article we wrote, was about a camper van that has been traveling around Peru with black and white images all around its outside representing cultures around the world. The idea of this project was to take art to people instead of people going to the art. Basically they wanted people who couldn't afford a museum or did not want to go to a museum, to have a visual glimpse of what photography is like, and the meaning of it. The project was created by Eduardo Echevarria and Beatrice Velarde | |
This is how the final published article looked like:
